Early Summer Temps Bring Morning Fog

It's like Mother Nature flipped a switch. From a record cold start to the year with temps struggling to get out of the 40's as late as April to 80's and humidity by early May. The northeast springs are not the best seasons, especially if you live near the water. However, this spring has transitioned even faster than normal. 

With the warm, summer-like temperatures occurring on a daily basis over the last week, it has had some impacts on the otherwise boring weather. Since the waters of Long Island sound are still chilly from a very cold winter, a temperature imbalance is experienced every day. This imbalance results in fog! 

As the temperature heat up over the land, it allows dew points  to rise slightly. Then as the temps drop of considerably at night or as the sea breeze kicks in, the temp hits the dew point and fog is formed. This usually occurs at the coldest part of the day, which is a little after sunrise. 

The fog usually begins out over Long Island sound and the Atlantic, where the temperature difference is not as great and then works inland. 

Below are photos I took during a run to the beach in Milford, CT on one of these days. When I left my house, which is about a mile away from the shore, the fog had broken up and the sun was breaking through the clouds making it quite uncomfortable. As I got closer to the beach i could feel the cooler breeze and soon I could see the fog bank off the coast and along the shore.

It's been a while!

It been a while since I updated this blog so I figured I would update with a photo I took of Charles Island a few weeks ago.  

It was an unusually warm day for November so of course there wa fog.  

The picture is looking out from the beach at the island, which is shrouded in the must of low forming clouds, aka fog.  

Foggy December Day 12/10/12

It's almost mid December and here in CT a warm front straddles the coastline. Temperatures range from the upper 40's to mid 50's this morning with a chance of hitting 60 degrees this afternoon. Although the temps make for a more comfortable day with no overcoat, it sure is a buzz kill when it comes to the Christmas Spirit!

With most warm fall days comes the fog and today is no different! As moisture streams northward it hits the cooler air causing it to condense at ground level and creating what we see as fog. Along the CT coast and CT valleys, this fog can be very dense. Below are some photos I took with my iPhone of fog at the beach. As you can see the first picture is of a flag pole at Anchor Beach, the rock it sits on is only 20-25 feet away from the street, over the water, yet it's hard to see! The second picture actually shows concrete steps that were removed due to damage from Hurricane Sandy with fog in the background! And finally the last picture is of Woodmont beach in the fog!

Beach restoration & fog banks 5/25/12

I went for a walk by the beach after dinner today and wasn't surprised to see a lot of activity! Of course it is the Friday of Memorial day weekend but also the beaches are finally be fixed up from last year's impact of Hurricane Irene. The sidewalks that were broken up by long island sound's waves have been replaced and the beach is being replenished with sand, even the grass and flowers lost to the salt and sand if storm surge have been replanted! As I continued to walk I even came across a sign from the federal government about the beach restoration (photo below) which was pretty cool.
Then on my way back I noticed a cool fog bank grasping at the coastline a few miles down. I took some photos but unfortunately my phone did not capture the texture of the fog bank! An interesting walk indeed for such a short stretch of beach!
